Australia to become third-largest wheat exporter

USDA estimates Australia’s 2021/22 wheat production at a record 34.0 million tons (mt), up 0.7 mt from last year. A second consecutive record wheat crop, strong global demand, and reduced competition are set to propel Australia’s wheat exports to record volumes. It is set to be the third-largest exporter, eclipsing the United States and Canada, which both have smaller crops, tighter stocks, and high prices.

Global food prices jump to decade-high

The UN’s benchmark food and commodity prices index rose sharply on average through 2021, FAO reported on Thursday. The FAO Cereal Price Index reached its highest annual level since 2012. “The high cost of inputs, ongoing global pandemic and ever more uncertain climatic conditions leave little room for optimism about a return to more stable market conditions even in 2022, ” said FAO Senior Economist Abdolreza Abbassian.

Transition to more sustainable production systems to reduce EU’s cereal production

The total EU cereal area is projected to decrease to 51.2 million hectares (ha) between 2021 and 2031, driven by a decrease in the main cereals areas. This will translate to cereal production of 276 million tonnes in 2031 (-2.5% compared to 2021). These are just a few of the projections from the European Union agricultural outlook for 2021-31 report published on 9 December 2021 by the European Commission.

Functional wheat starches replace titanium dioxide

As EFSA no longer considers the white pigment titanium dioxide (E 171) to be safe, it won’t be allowed to be used in foods from 2022 onwards, according to EU regulations.
