It was the beginning of the new millennium. Gone through the traumatic economic crisis, Turkey became a rising star quickly in the world since the country took decisive steps in order to become a member of the European Union. Meanwhile, Turkish milling machines and flour industry have become stronger and entered into new markets. Right there, we decided to publish the Miller Magazine. There had been no international magazine that keeps the record of the milling sector – one of the most important, ancient industries-, shares the innovation in the sector, and points out the problems and offers solutions to them. One available publication was focusing on the United States. We felt both excited and encouraged because such a publication was needed and we had a network, which we have established thanks to IDMA, the only international exhibition on milling machines, cereals and pulses processing technology. We took the road on April 2006 with an aim to become the voice of the stakeholders of the sector and share know-how through the issue of technical articles. And twelve years have passed since the first publication, and we reached the 100th issue. Easier said than done! Publishing 100 issues in such a specialty field was not easy not all. Particularly, at a period when people were predicting that digitalization will supersede the printed materials. This is a highly symbolic step for us, a milestone, critical juncture and an important threshold. In retrospect, how much has this magazine accomplished its goals?
We ponder over this matter a lot. Still, we feel proud of the feedbacks from significant players of the sector. For example, Bühler, world leader of the milling sector, said that “Bühler happily relies on the magazine’s great superior studies, expert articles and insight.“ Such comments prove that we have been on the right track. Mustafa Bayram, Head of the Department of Food Technology at the Gaziantep University, said that “A person can see these publications on the bookshelf of a student studying this sector.” Also, Melek Malkoç, the General Manager of Anamed & Analitik Group, who is one of the experienced people that tracks international publication and reads the publication rigorously with an academic eye, recommended that this publication should be on bookshelves of universities. These aforementioned comments prove that we covered a lot of distance. Moreover, Erhan Özmen, the president of Southeast Flour Industrialists’ Association, said that “For us, the Miller is more than a publication; it is a reference guide and a blueprint.” His comments are not only appreciation of our works but also a warning that the magazine should maintain its quality level.
We feel honored by these comments, but we are not getting spoiled. On the contrary, such praises encourage us to raise the bar even higher and renew ourselves with each issue. Within this line, we want readers to know that the Miller will start to published in Arabic and Russia again; we will publish the magazine in Spanish as well. These three magazines will be published quarterly and will enable the stakeholders in the sector to address different geographies. The magazine which already can reach to more than 80 thousand professionals across more than 150 countries will be able to address a wider mass of audience. Another important step we take is digitization. Readers will see that there will be more updates on the website and social media channels.
As we celebrate the publication of the 100th issue, I want to express my gratitude to all members of the advisory board, editors, designers, publishers, and distributors that contributed this magazine so far. Of course, we could not have been at this point without the support of the dear representatives of the sector and readers. I express my wholehearted gratitude to you.
Hope to meet you on such anniversaries again…
Thank you…
