IDMA sails to Southeast Asia to meet growing grain product demand

25 August 20234 min reading

IDMA is embarking on a strategic expansion into Southeast Asia, a region witnessing a remarkable surge in the demand for grain-based products. Renowned as the globe's largest international exhibition within the flour, grain, and feed production technologies sector, IDMA is set to engage with its audience in the vibrant city of Jakarta from October 4-6, 2023 in cooperation with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN). IDMA Indonesia will establish an unparalleled platform, enabling both exhibitors and visitors to explore groundbreaking technologies, foster strategic partnerships, and harness opportunities within the regional market.

The interplay of climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict has vividly underscored the global significance of ensuring food security and embracing sustainable production practices. This is even more important for Southeast Asian countries, which depend on imports for many grain crops. The rapid population growth in Southeast Asian countries, whose population is now approaching 700 million, is expected to increase food demand by %40 by 2050 in this 10-country region. The FAO-OECD Agricultural Outlook 2023-2032 Report, released in early July, also reveals that Asian countries will lead the increase in grain demand. According to the report, global grain use, which is 2.8 billion tons, will increase to 3.1 billion tons in 10 years and almost half of the projected increase in demand will come from Asia, especially Southeast Asian countries (ASEAN).

Although rice is the staple food in the region, demand for wheat and corn has been increasing in recent years. Southeast Asia's bakery products market size is expected to grow to 15 billion dollars within 5 years. This growth trajectory has spurred ASEAN countries to adopt a two-pronged approach: increasing grain production and harnessing technological innovations in food processing to enhance productivity. Therefore, with its growing population and strong economic growth prospects, Southeast Asia offers a high potential for the grain processing industry.

OPPORTUNITY TO EXPAND INTO ASEAN REGION

Indonesia, the largest country in the region, will host IDMA Indonesia Exhibition to realize this high potential. The exhibition, which will open its doors in the capital Jakarta on October 4-6, 2023, will reshape the future of the grain processing industry. Bringing together the world's best milling machinery and equipment manufacturers in the Southeast Asia region, IDMA Indonesia will be a unique platform for exhibitors and visitors to discover revolutionary technologies, forge strategic alliances and capitalize on opportunities in Indonesia and the wider regional market. Combining innovation with tradition, the exhibition will increase the market reach of companies supplying technology for flour, rice and corn processing, as well as noodle, pasta, biscuit and feed manufacturing brands.

Considering that the need for flour production will grow by 25% on average in the next 5 years and the need for feed will grow by 30% on average in the same period due to the increasing population in the Southeast Asia region; IDMA Indonesia, which will bring together the world's most important technology developers in this field in Jakarta, will provide important gains in sustainable production and food safety.

INDONESIA TO INCREASE FLOUR PRODUCTION CAPACITY

In Indonesia, where the population is expected to grow from 274 million to 322 million by 2050, urbanization and the continued growth of the middle class will increase the consumption of wheat-based foods. Flour production capacity is estimated to increase by 3 million tons by 2025 due to rapidly increasing wheat flour consumption. In the country's feed industry, 110 modern plants produce over 30 million tons annually, and there is a need to increase production capacity every year in line with growing demand. The situation is similar in the regional countries of Malaysia, Vietnam, Australia, the Philippines, New Zealand, Thailand, India, China, New Guinea and Myanmar.

STRONG SUPPORT FROM SECTORAL ASSOCIATIONS

APTINDO from Indonesia, ATMA, AEGIC and Grains Australia from Australia, IPGA, RFMFI and AIFPA from India, NZFMA from New Zealand, and TABADER from Turkey are supporting the event, which will be held in cooperation with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN).
