Al Hazaa encourages flour fortification at World Economic Forum in Davos

To discuss the pivotal role of millers in staple food fortification, Al-Hazaa Investment Group participated at "How Can We Change the Game for Local Millers to Enhance Nutrition? A Call for Action” event in Davos, Switzerland.

Due to the global food crisis and the continuously rising food prices, millions of people are now at risk of starvation and malnutrition, while flour fortification is a proven and effective intervention to enhance nutrition and improve people’s health and well-being. To discuss the pivotal role of millers in staple food fortification, Al-Hazaa Investment Group participated at "How Can We Change the Game for Local Millers to Enhance Nutrition? A Call for Action” event in Davos, Switzerland.

The event was hosted by TechnoServe and took place at the SDG Tent during the World Economic Forum (WEF) held interactive discussions between industry leaders, to talk about the importance of staple food fortification and how they can encourage, empower, and incentivize more millers to fortify flour to the right levels to reach millions of people affected by malnutrition, and to explore what needs to be done differently to enable local millers to scale up their fortification efforts.

Al-Hazaa Investment Group which operates a total of 12 flour mills in the Middle East and has a daily flour production capacity of 5,000 tons/day, joined the event as one of the representatives of large millers in the region to talk about the challenges they face, share their perspective about the flour fortification and what is hindering other millers from fortifying flour. During the event, Mariam Al-Hazaa, Business Development Manager at Al-Hazaa Investment Group spoke about the cost of fortification premixes resulting in the high price of fortified flour and the inconsistencies of the overall appearance of the fortified baked goods, as some of the challenges that restrain millers from taking the step of fortification in Jordan and the Middle East.

The event ended with a call for action and a request to commit to strengthening support and recognition for millers through a new initiative, currently in development: MillersForNutrition (M4N), in which the objective of the M4N Initiative is to make food fortification as easy and rewarding as possible for millers by creating a comprehensive support offer that combines world-class technical assistance with top-performer recognition and other incentive structures to increase transparency along the food fortification value chain."
