Improving milling performance

Milling performance simply means the running efficiency of the milling and cleaning machines at optimum capacity. In other words, it means consistency in the operation of the milling equipment and production activities without downtime or breakdown of equipment and maximum utilization of the milling machines' capacity.

Wheat milling aims to separate structural components of the wheat kernel by break open the grain and recover the endosperm from other parts which are the bran skins and embryo and then reduce the endosperm to particles with a specified size distribution. Millers make their efforts to have three major objectives, which are the optimum extraction rate with the maximum quality of finished products and the capacity of the mill. Their efforts for these objectives are aimed to have the optimum economic balance of these objectives. Miller to achieve his aim has to practice efficient milling techniques and optimize the streams of every machine in the mill. So intermediate streams are continuously monitored for quantity, quality and granulation and this data is used for adjustment by the miller.

Optimum milling performance refers to items such as output per hour, extraction, quality of final flour such as color, water absorption, protein values and moisture control with regard to milling gain or loss.

Increasing performance by the technology of the milling system basically depends on raw materials, processing conditions, process control, processing parameters, monitoring and diagnosis, energy management, correct equipment, trained person, operator, engineering, quality control, correct design, technology level and yield.
