In its first forecast for the 2025 crop, COCERAL highlights moderate growth in grain production across the EU-27 for 2025. Total grain production is projected to rise to 274.9 million tonnes in 2025, compared to 259.3 million tonnes in 2024, reflecting an increase of 6% year-on-year, driven by improved yields and expanded cultivation in several member states.
Soft wheat continues to dominate European grain production, with an expected output of 126.5 million tonnes in 2025, up from 114.1 million tonnes in 2024, representing an increase of 10.9% year-on-year. The increase is primarily driven by better yields, rising from an average of 55.9 hectograms per hectare in 2024 to 58.8 hectograms per hectare in 2025. Major contributors include:
- France: Forecasted to produce 33.9 million tonnes, up from 25.5 million tonnes in 2024, representing a significant increase of 32.9% year-on-year.
- Germany: Expected output of 20.8 million tonnes, an increase from 18.3 million tonnes.
- Poland: Production is projected at 12.9 million tonnes, up from 12.3 million tonnes.
CORN AND BARLEY
Corn production in the EU-27 is forecasted to rise to 61.8 million tonnes in 2025, up from 60 million tonnes in 2024. This growth is attributed to increased yields in countries like Romania and Hungary. Barley production is also expected to increase slightly, reaching 51.9 million tonnes, compared to 50.3 million tonnes in 2024.
While overall grain production trends upward, durum wheat and oats are expected to remain relatively stable or decline slightly. Durum wheat production is forecasted at 7.5 million tonnes, a slight decrease from 7.6 million tonnes in 2024, while oats are expected to remain stable at 7.2 million tonnes, with minimal changes compared to the previous year.
