İhsan Duru, CEO of Duru Bulgur pointed out that seeding of wheat which is an extremely important grain for Turkey is decreasing year by year. He said that the decrease in wheat can be avoided by observing the establishment principles of Agriculture Basin Model and keeping the structure of the soil and water scarcity in the region in mind.
İhsan Duru, CEO of Duru Bulgur which is conducting R&D studies together with Karamanoğlu Mehmet Bey Üniversitesi (KMÜ) in order to carry the seeds of Ahmet Buğday (Ahmet Wheat) which has a history of 2 thousand years in Karaman into future.
“Turkey harvested 21.5 million tons of wheat including 3.9 million tons of durum wheat and 17.6 million tons of bread wheat in 2017 harvest.
In 2018 harvest, we are expecting a 30 percent decrease in durum wheat which the raw material of bulgur and pasta. And the bread wheat will decrease by around 11 percent. We should analyze the decrease in this crucial grain and take necessary actions,” Duru said.
İhsan Duru, CEO of Duru Bulgur said one of the most important reasons lying behind the decrease in the seeding of wheat is the violation of the establishment principles of Agriculture Basins Production and Support Model.
“The yield in durum wheat is lower than bread wheat and maize. When the total income is evaluated together with the pricing and the support, for example, the income a farmer owning a 125-decare land will earn is 22.750 Turkish Liras if he sows durum wheat completely.
The same farmer will earn 36.750 Liras if he sows maize completely. Farmers naturally head towards maize due to the income earned regarding the support,” he added.
THE DECREASE IN WHEAT SEEDING WILL
INCREASE FOREIGN DEPENDENCY
Underlining that the difference between the incomes encourages farmers to sow maize instead of wheat, Duru said, “The decrease in wheat production results in extremely important consequences for our country.
First, our foreign dependency for this essential nutrient is increasing. And together with the decrease in wheat seeding, the wheat straw which is important for the livestock industry and is used as roughage is also decreasing and it is started to be imported.
Stressing that the need for water in corn farming is 7 and a half times more water than wheat, İhsan Duru said that, “Our region has a continental climate. Despite the water scarcity, corn is included in the scope of the support program from the beginning.
Water demand for wheat is 78 tons per decare while it is 7 and a half times more for corn and is 582 tons per decare.
Drawing water from a depth of 250 meters for fulfilling the irrigation demand necessary for agricultural production causes different problems. It may even result in regional disasters such as dolines.
Duru which is a leading food company in Turkey is also a leader in the bulgur sector with 16 types of bulgur it produces.
It is procuring the wheat which is the raw material of bulgur from 4500 farmers across the Central and Southeastern Anatolia regions. Duru Bulgur has a wheat stocking capacity of 100 thousand tons.
Duru Bulgur took Ahmet Wheat which is deemed as valuable as gold under protection in order to increase the quality the bulgur it produces in traditional methods, preserve its naturality, hand local seeds down to the next generations and benefit from it in the industry.
