Saudi Agricultural and Livestock Investment Company (SALIC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, has completed the acquisition of a controlling 80.01% stake in Olam Agri Holdings in a transaction valued at $1.88 billion. The deal gives SALIC access to a major global origination, processing and logistics platform across more than 30 countries, strengthening Saudi Arabia’s position in international food and agricultural supply chains.
SALIC has completed a major step in its global food security strategy by increasing its equity stake in Olam Agri Holdings to 80.01%, giving the company a controlling position in one of the world’s key agricultural commodity platforms.
The transaction, valued at $1.88 billion, equivalent to around SAR 7 billion, marks a significant expansion of SALIC’s international portfolio and underlines Saudi Arabia’s ambition to play a larger role in global food supply chain resilience.
Olam Agri is active across essential agricultural commodities, with integrated operations covering origination, processing, logistics and distribution. Its network spans more than 30 countries across Asia, Africa, Australia and the Americas, giving SALIC broader exposure to global commodity flows and physical supply infrastructure.
A STRATEGIC STEP IN FOOD SECURITY
SALIC said the acquisition supports its strategy of diversifying supply networks and securing direct access to global food sources. For Saudi Arabia, a country structurally dependent on food imports, overseas agricultural investments have become an important pillar of long-term food security planning.
The deal moves SALIC beyond a minority strategic partnership with Olam Agri, which began in 2022, into a controlling role. The company said the aim is to build an integrated global platform capable of improving supply reliability and responding to shifts in international food markets.
Eng. Sulaiman bin Abdulrahman Al-Rumaih, Group CEO of SALIC, described the transaction as a historic milestone in SALIC’s development, saying it would strengthen the company’s role across global food supply chains and support the reliable movement of essential commodities to international markets.
OLAM AGRI PLATFORM EXPANDS SALIC’S GLOBAL REACH
With the completion of the deal, SALIC’s portfolio now includes 12 strategic assets worldwide. The addition of Olam Agri’s infrastructure gives the Saudi group a larger role in commodity origination, processing and logistics at a time when global grain and food supply chains remain exposed to geopolitical tensions, climate risks, freight disruptions and policy uncertainty.
Through Olam Agri, SALIC gains access to a platform that manages large-scale flows of agricultural commodities from origin to destination. This type of integrated structure can improve visibility over supply, reduce procurement risks and support more flexible sourcing strategies during periods of market disruption.
SAUDI ARABIA SEEKS A LARGER ROLE IN GLOBAL AGRI-FOOD TRADE
Al-Rumaih said the expansion reflects a balance between SALIC’s global ambitions and Saudi Arabia’s national food security responsibilities. He added that the investment supports the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 objectives by helping build more resilient, sustainable and future-ready sectors.
The acquisition also positions Saudi Arabia more prominently in the global food ecosystem. By controlling a company with significant origination and logistics capabilities, SALIC is strengthening its ability to connect producing regions with importing markets.
The move comes at a time when governments and major food companies are placing greater emphasis on supply chain resilience. Recent years have shown that agricultural trade can be affected not only by production levels and price movements, but also by export restrictions, conflict, freight volatility, currency shifts and climate-related disruptions.
SALIC’s initial partnership with Olam Agri in 2022 was already viewed as a strategic move to expand Saudi Arabia’s access to international food supply chains. The latest transaction deepens that relationship and gives SALIC a more decisive role in shaping the platform’s future direction.
