Resilient Grain Markets: Unlocking Africa’s Food Security Potential — this is the unifying theme of the 11th African Grain Trade Summit (AGTS), scheduled to take place from October 2 to 4, 2025, in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Organized by the Eastern Africa Grain Council (EAGC), the biennial summit will convene over 500 stakeholders from across the continent to tackle one of Africa’s most pressing development challenges: food insecurity.

At a time when Africa’s grain markets are grappling with inefficiencies, post-harvest losses, infrastructure gaps, and insufficient investment, AGTS 2025 positions itself as a strategic platform to foster collaboration, share innovations, and inspire actionable commitments to transform the grain value chain.
A STRATEGIC GATHERING FOR AFRICA’S GRAIN FUTURE
With participation expected from government officials, private sector leaders, development organizations, financial institutions, and researchers, the AGTS provides a space for policy dialogue, investment matchmaking, and knowledge exchange.
The summit's thematic focus will cover six high-level sessions:
- Breaking the Barriers – Addressing inefficiencies in grain value chains and infrastructure.
- Innovation for Impact – Featuring case studies on cutting-edge technologies and solutions.
- Uniting for Growth – Building partnerships through financing models and public-private synergies.
- Policy Reform as a Catalyst – Advocating trade harmonization and AfCFTA-aligned frameworks.
- From Dialogue to Action – Driving tangible commitments and monitoring progress.
- Resilient Grain Markets for Food Security – Outlining a continental vision aligned with global food systems.
INNOVATION AND IMPACT ON DISPLAY
Complementing the conference sessions, the AGTS exhibition will showcase transformative technologies across key areas such as:
- Post-harvest management and modern storage solutions
- Digital agriculture and market intelligence platforms
- Climate-smart inputs like drought-resistant seeds
- Value-added grain processing technologies
- Logistics and infrastructure innovation
- Agricultural finance, insurance, and risk-sharing tools
- Circular economy solutions and carbon management
BUSINESS LINKAGES AND REGIONAL COOPERATION
A dedicated B2B matchmaking forum will facilitate direct engagement between buyers, sellers, and service providers—helping build trade linkages and improve market access across the region. Participants will also take part in field visits to grain handling and storage sites in Zanzibar, including Fumba Port and the national port, offering practical insights into real-world solutions. The event will be rounded off with a Gala Dinner, offering a unique networking opportunity amid Zanzibar’s rich culture and coastal ambiance.
WHY ZANZIBAR?
Zanzibar's geographical location at the heart of East Africa’s trade routes, combined with its cultural legacy and emerging agricultural innovation agenda, makes it a symbolic and strategic venue for this pan-African gathering.
Since its inception in 2005, the African Grain Trade Summit has catalyzed regional integration and market development. From the harmonization of grain standards to lifting trade restrictions and promoting warehouse receipt systems, past AGTS editions have delivered tangible progress.
The 11th AGTS aims to build on this legacy by driving collective action toward resilient, efficient, and inclusive grain markets capable of feeding the continent—and contributing meaningfully to global food systems.
