Türkiye opens 1 million-ton tariff quota for corn imports until harvest

To ensure corn supply security, Türkiye has introduced a 1 million-ton tariff quota effective until June 30, 2025. A 5% customs duty will apply to imports, with a maximum of 8,000 tons allowed per shipment. To protect local producers, considering the harvest season, the tariff will revert to 130% starting from July 1, 2025.

The Turkish Ministry of Trade has announced a significant measure to secure corn supply and stabilize prices. Due to insufficient domestic production, a tariff quota of up to 1 million tons will be in effect until June 30, 2025. The regulation, announced early in the day, aims to control the prices of corn, which is widely used in animal feed and some essential food products.

In an official statement, the Ministry of Trade emphasized that the measure, initiated at the request of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, is designed to "guide the market correctly, prevent speculative pricing, ensure the security of supply for essential food products, and meet domestic demand with local production." Under the new regulation, a 5% customs duty will apply to imported corn.

To protect domestic producers, the measure will expire on July 1, 2025, when ‘the tariff on corn imports will return to its original rate of 130%’. Additionally, to ensure fair distribution, a single import transaction will be limited to a maximum of 8,000 tons, and there will be a mandatory waiting period of seven days between subsequent imports.

The statement also noted that the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry will continue to monitor market conditions closely and take necessary measures to maintain supply and demand balance.
