Grain operators want ready-to-operate factories

Highlighting the growing emphasis placed by nations on enhancing their grain processing capabilities, Samet Taşkın, a Board Member of Ortaş Mill, underscored the increasing demand for turnkey factory installations. However, Taşkın expressed concern over the arduous and time-consuming processes involved in establishing a factory, stating, “This is where we step in. We construct turnkey facilities tailored to meet the specific demands of our customers, alleviating them from the burdensome processes.”

The demand for grains and grain products has steadily risen in tandem with global population growth. According to the latest report released in April by the International Grains Council, the world’s grain demand for the 2024-25 season is projected to soar to a record high of 2 billion 331 million tons. Furthermore, the Council anticipates that demand will surpass production for wheat. Concurrently with the escalating grain demand, the significance of the grain processing industry for global food security is becoming increasingly apparent. Particularly, the Covid-19 pandemic, which has disrupted global grain trade chains, has prompted both public and private institutions to reassess their grain processing capacities. It is evident that many countries are shifting towards importing grain with longer storage life and processing it domestically rather than exporting flour. This transition underscores the pivotal role of the milling machinery industry in meeting evolving global needs.

In an interview with Miller Magazine discussing sector advancements, Samet Taşkın, a member of the board of directors at Ortaş Mill, emphasized the growing significance nations place on achieving self-sufficiency in milling capacity. Highlighting the escalating global wheat production from 582 million tons in 2000 to a projected 784 million tons in 2023, Taşkın underscored the mounting importance of wheat and wheat flour in the contemporary landscape. However, Taşkın expressed concern over the prolonged and strenuous processes associated with establishing a flour production factory, stating, “Constructing a factory that is fully operational and energy-efficient entails not only a significant capital investment but also necessitates a wealth of expertise. This is where we step in. Depending on customer demand, we set up turnkey facilities in compact multi-story steel and concrete structures inside hangars. If the structures for the factories are requested from us, we prepare them as steel constructions according to the project and install them on site. If the customer will handle the structures themselves, we perform the dimensioning of the building to be constructed. Once the building is ready, we completely supply the factory equipment and provide installation and commissioning services. This way, our customer can easily get through all these exhausting processes.”

‘DETAILED FEASIBILITY STUDY IS ESSENTIAL FOR FACTORY SETUP’

Underlining the criticality of acquiring high-quality and diversified flour within the fiercely competitive grain sector, Taşkın emphasized that this factor is precisely why their customers opt for their services. Furthermore, he outlined the subsequent steps essential for establishing a factory: “The first thing companies wanting to set up a factory should do is to convey their demand correctly. Priority should be given to the feasibility study of the project suitable for this demand, cost, amortization, and quality elements, and attention should be paid to the quality of after-sales service. The more detailed and meticulously customers prepare their demand, the higher the quality of the work produced. Once all the feasibility studies are conducted and approved by the customer, the work starts. The facility is made operational in the most reasonable time possible and then delivered. So, the customer only thinks about the production process, getting rid of all the troubles related to installation.

Mr. Taşkın expressed that the need for turnkey factory installation is increasing day by day and said, “ “This trend underscores both the sector’s growth momentum and our own. In 2023, we experienced a growth rate of 12%, and we are targeting a further expansion of 15% in 2024.”

TRANSFORMING EXISTING ONES IS AS IMPORTANT AS SETTING UP FROM SCRATCH’

Samet Taşkın also emphasizes the significance of adapting and modernizing existing grain processing plants in accordance with contemporary technology. “It’s quite important to develop existing grain factories according to today’s technology. This transformation is essential both for increasing efficiency and achieving digitalization. With nearly 30 years of experience, we open up many areas of service to enterprises, starting with consultancy. Setting up wheat flour, animal feed, corn, and semolina factories is among our main areas of expertise. In addition, we offer solutions in the construction of systems for the storage and processing of grain, construction of steel structures, automation of production, equipment analysis, and more. With our productions compliant with European Union standards, we serve in more than 30 countries, primarily in the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and Africa.” he concluded.
