Constanta Port to expand storage and handling facilities

14 January 20252 min reading

Romanian freight forwarder Trade Transport Services (TTS) has announced a €22.9 million investment to expand its grain terminal at the Port of Constanta. The investment aims to increase the terminal’s storage capacity, which will rise from 110,000 tonnes to 180,000 tonnes.

According to a report filed with the Bucharest Stock Exchange, the expansion will include the construction of six additional storage cells, each with a capacity of 10,975 tonnes, and five buffer cells, each capable of holding 863 tonnes. The works are set to begin in January 2025, with the project expected to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

The investment will be managed by Canopus Star, a subsidiary of TTS Group and the terminal operator, which will cover approximately 35% of the costs. The remaining funds will be secured through a bank loan, which is currently under negotiation. The upgraded terminal will feature two unloading points capable of handling 350 tonnes per hour each, designed for receiving goods from barges and trucks. The existing shiploaders will be able to transship goods onto vessels at a rate of 800 to 1,000 tonnes per hour. In addition, the project includes a new intake point for river units, a new unloading point for trucks, necessary equipment to serve the cargo flows, and connections with the existing terminal, as well as three in-line scales.

In recent years, the Port of Constanta has solidified its role as a pivotal hub for grain exports, particularly in light of regional geopolitical tensions. In 2023, the port achieved record grain export volumes, largely due to increased shipments from Ukraine. To further enhance its capacity and efficiency, the Romanian government has committed over $162.5 million to upgrade the port’s rail infrastructure, including the development of a second railroad access point. This investment underscores Constanta’s strategic importance as a logistics hub for grain exports from Romania and neighboring countries.
