UK Flour Millers, the trade body representing the flour milling industry across the United Kingdom and Ireland, has announced the election of Mike Peters as its new President. The appointment was formalized at the association’s Annual General Meeting held on 5 June during its biennial Convention in Belfast.
Mike Peters
Mike Peters brings over 45 years of experience in the milling sector, having held senior roles at Allied Mills Limited and ADM Milling. Since joining Whitworth Bros Ltd in 2004, he has played a key role in the company’s operations, serving as Managing Director from 2016 until late 2024. He currently acts as Milling Group Advisor for the company. Peters succeeds Gary Sharkey, Procurement Director at Hovis, who has served as President of UK Flour Millers for the past two years.
Speaking upon his election, Mike Peters said, “Milling has been a constant in my life for more than four decades. I’m honoured and delighted to have this opportunity to give back to the industry through the presidency of the association.” “I look forward to working with the UK Flour Millers team and continuing the great work done with Gary Sharkey, particularly in ensuring that this often underappreciated industry is recognised for its vital role in food security. I will also place a strong emphasis on training and skills development to support the next generation of millers across the country.”
UK Flour Millers represents 32 member organisations operating 51 flour mills throughout the UK and Ireland. Originally known as the National Association of British & Irish Millers, the organisation advocates for the industry, supports wheat supply resilience, promotes health and safety, and facilitates training and R&D initiatives.
Flour milling plays a critical role in the UK economy, with a gross value added (GVA) per employee of £141,000—more than twice the national average of £64,000. The industry generates around £2 billion in annual turnover, contributes £700 million in value to the economy, and delivers approximately £270 million in taxes (direct and indirect) to the exchequer.
