“In order to further predict the development of the pulse industry and taking into account the impact of the world market situation, we must be ready for challenges that will undoubtedly affect each of its participants. Therefore, our further task is to identify the main factors that will influence the further development of the pulse industry in the global pulses market system.”
Community of Ukrainian Pulse Producers and Customers
It is not a secret for anyone that the world`s population over the past decades has been growing rapidly and, according to UN forecasts, it will be reached the mark 9.6 billion people by 2050. Certainly, to provide needs of humanity for food is becoming increasingly difficult.
Pulse today have three aspects: primarily, it is a growing demand in the world markets for these products, which means new export opportunities for Ukrainian Pulse producers. The countries of Asia, Middle and Middle East and Africa are the regions, where we can find our place as a supplier of pulses and products for their processing.
The second important aspect is the positive effect of legumes on the soil. In addition, the question of preserving the soil fertility is already very acute today.
Well, the third factor is the usefulness of pulses as a source of protein for consumers. Therefore, despite the still not very high consumption of pulses in Ukraine, I am confident that the internal market for them will also grow, because Ukrainians will increasingly care about their health and a healthy lifestyle, an integral part of which in the whole world, pulses consumed.
It is very pleased to note that the pulse crop market in Ukraine has been growing rapidly over the past few years. In 2016, their production amounted to 812.5 thousand tons, and in 2017, the production of pulses increased almost 1.5 times and amounted to about 1.2 million tons. We expect that in 2017/2018 marketing year, only peas exports from Ukraine will amount to 750-800 thousand tons.
We can assert that Ukraine has already become an important participant in the world pulse market and one of the world’s leaders in their exports.
Considering that the world’s supply of pulses “does not make it” on demand, which is also growing rapidly due to the rapid growth of the world’s population, and pulses crops are an alternative to animal proteins; Ukraine has real opportunities to increase its contribution to the global food security system. The importance of pulse crops is due not only to their high export potential, but also to the effectiveness of crop rotation. Pulse crops are attractive to the farmer and from an economic point of view.
In order to further predict the development of the pulse industry and taking into account the impact of the world market situation, we must be ready for challenges that will undoubtedly affect each of its participants. Therefore, our further task is to identify the main factors that will influence the further development of the pulse industry in the global pulses market system.
