Millers for Nutrition launched in Indonesia to strengthen national nutrition security

A new chapter in Indonesia’s food fortification journey begins, as TechnoServe and KFI co-launch Millers for Nutrition to help combat micronutrient deficiencies and improve public health outcomes.

Millers for Nutrition, a global coalition dedicated to advancing large-scale food fortification (LSFF), has officially launched its operations in Indonesia. The initiative aims to strengthen the nation’s nutrition security by supporting local millers in fortifying staple foods such as wheat flour, edible oil, and rice with essential vitamins and minerals.

The launch event took place during the “Large Scale Food Fortification for Health, Nutrition Status and Productivity” convening, co-hosted by TechnoServe and the Indonesian Nutrition Foundation for Food Fortification (KFI). Attended by senior representatives from the Government of Indonesia and key industry stakeholders, the event highlighted the pressing need for coordinated action to tackle widespread micronutrient deficiencies — a major barrier to achieving the goals of Indonesia’s Golden Indonesia 2045 vision.

A STRATEGIC RESPONSE TO NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Indonesia’s National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2025–2029, aligned with the broader Golden Indonesia 2045 vision, identifies nutrition improvement as a national priority. Despite economic and social progress, micronutrient deficiencies — including iron deficiency anemia, iodine deficiency, and vitamin A deficiency — remain prevalent and are associated with stunted growth, impaired cognitive development, higher maternal and child mortality, and reduced productivity.

Mandatory food fortification is seen as one of the most effective, scalable, and cost-efficient strategies to address these deficiencies. The upcoming National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN) 2025–2045 has formally included LSFF as a key intervention to enhance the health and nutrition status of the population.

EMPOWERING INDONESIAN MILLERS FOR IMPACT

Millers for Nutrition, now operating in eight countries across Africa and Asia, connects strategic partners, technical experts, and food producers to deliver high-impact support. The initiative helps millers enhance food quality, boost operational competitiveness, and open new market opportunities — all while contributing to national health goals.

“We are thrilled to introduce Millers for Nutrition in Indonesia,” said Monojit Indra, Senior Practice Leader at TechnoServe and Program Leader for Millers for Nutrition Asia. “We want to unite passionate stakeholders to support Indonesian millers and food processors in achieving fortification excellence and driving meaningful change in the battle against malnutrition. Together, we can transform the future of nutrition in Indonesia.”

Government Support and Industry Recognition

Mrs. Diah Lenggogeni, ST, MSc, Director for Public Health and Nutrition at BAPPENAS, delivered a keynote address, emphasizing that fortification has become a shared commitment across both national and international platforms. She called for stronger partnerships between the government, food industry, NGOs, academic institutions, and development agencies to ensure the success and sustainability of LSFF programs in the country.

A central panel discussion brought together representatives from Indonesia’s edible oil, wheat flour, and rice milling sectors, who discussed the challenges and opportunities in aligning with national fortification standards.

The event concluded with the presentation of awards to millers and associations demonstrating outstanding commitment to food fortification:
