Leonardo Edge: Why it is the future of roller mills?

Omas Industries, the Italian company specializing in machinery and plants for cereal milling based in San Giorgio delle Pertiche, in the province of Padua, proudly unveils Leonardo Edge – the most advanced evolution of its iconic Leonardo roller mill. 

The new model has been revealed as a world premiere at the end of May at IPACK-IMA 2025 in Milan. Born from years of research, on-field testing, and constant dialogue with millers worldwide, Leonardo Edge sets a new benchmark in modern milling. It combines automation, precision, and energy efficiency to deliver unprecedented performance. Here’s why it’s not just a machine, but a true revolution in roller milling.

DIRECT-DRIVE TECHNOLOGY FOR TOTAL CONTROL 

Leonardo Edge replaces traditional traction systems with independent direct-drive torque motors, allowing each grinding roll to operate at a customized speed. The result? Maximum flexibility, optimized processing, and no downtime to change mechanical parts. The system continuously monitors torque and rotational speed, dynamically adjusting motor drives, wheat feed rate, and roll pressure. These parameters are stored and recalled automatically, adapting to recurring production conditions. Thanks to Omas’ Flexy Mill™ system, technologists can fine-tune settings or let the machine adjust itself autonomously – even mid-process. 


ENERGY RECOVERY AND UNPARALLELED EFFICIENCY 

Leonardo Edge integrates the patented OKS – Omas Kers System, which recovers energy from the motor powering the slow roll and transfers it in real time to the fast roll. This unique solution significantly reduces energy consumption while enhancing performance. Torque motors used in Leonardo Edge offer higher efficiency than asynchronous motors, and their independent control means only the required energy is delivered to each roll. Furthermore, the elimination of belt transmissions simplifies the structure: an entire floor usually needed for traditional motors becomes unnecessary. This means lower construction costs, reduced installation time, and streamlined plant engineering. No belts also means minimal maintenance and maximum operator safety, thanks to the absence of exposed mechanical components.


THE MILLING PILOT: INTELLIGENT MILLING AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

At the heart of Leonardo Edge lies the Milling Pilot – an integrated system of sensors and automation that makes the roller mill fully self-regulating: 

  • The Omas Drive System enables micrometric adjustment of the milling gap with a precision of 0.004 mm. The distance can be set, saved, and reproduced for different recipes, eliminating the risk of incorrect manual adjustment of the milling roll distance by the operator. 
  • The Omas Cylinders System monitors roll surface temperature to verify uniform grinding and trigger adjustments when needed. 
  • The Omas Bearings System tracks bearing temperatures to reduce wear, ensure efficiency, and prevent downtime. 
  • The Omas Multirecipe module manages every recipe parameter – from roll gap and feeding roll RPM to roll speed ratios and inversion – all directly from the intuitive HMI. 


However, the OCS represents Omas’s latest cutting-edge invention: a system composed of three infrared sensors capable of intercepting the working temperature of the rolls. Electrically wired, it allows monitoring abnormal temperature increases through alarms visible on the machine’s HMI (Human-Machine Interface). This enhances the mill’s work safety level by ensuring a uniform temperature along the entire milling roll and automatically stopping the machine in case of an abnormal temperature rise. Maintaining a correct and uniform temperature along the milling rolls ensures the nutritional properties of the flours, guaranteeing consistent milling and high-quality flour. Overheating the flour significantly compromises the final product’s quality, affecting derived bakery products such as pasta, bread, pizza, etc. 

With just one touch, operators can set the machine, walk away and trust it to run independently while maintaining peak performance. This system automates the control of rolls and temperature, paving the way for the AI mill.
