The International Grains Council, together with the IMEAA Ecosystem and with support from Microsoft AI for Good, has launched the Smart Global Grains Trade Challenge 2026 to promote digital, data-driven and AI-enabled solutions across the global grains trade.
The International Grains Council (IGC) has launched a new global innovation initiative aimed at accelerating digital transformation in the grains trade, as supply chains face mounting pressure from climate volatility, geopolitical tensions and operational complexity. The programme, titled Smart Global Grains Trade Challenge 2026, is being co-organised with the India Middle East Agri Alliance Ecosystem (IMEAA Ecosystem) and supported by Microsoft AI for Good.
According to the IGC, more than 500 million metric tonnes of cereals and grains, valued at around US$156 billion, are traded globally each year, moving from more than 140 exporting countries to nearly 200 destination markets. The Council says this vast network supports millions of farmers, links thousands of market participants and plays a central role in food and nutrition security between surplus and deficit regions.
In its announcement, the IGC underlined that grains trade is no longer just about the physical movement of commodities. As supply chains become more complex and exposure to climate and geopolitical risks intensifies, the role of digital tools and artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly strategic. The Council highlighted a wide range of areas where technology is already reshaping the sector, including market research, data analytics, weather intelligence, post-harvest management, logistics, traceability, contract execution, risk management and food waste reduction.
The new challenge is designed to identify and showcase innovative technology-led solutions that can improve the efficiency, transparency and resilience of global grains trade operations. Its main focus will be on the digitalisation of grains trade processes, particularly in the post-harvest segment, with an emphasis on solutions that can be scaled across the Global South.
Applications are open to startups, scale-ups and established companies developing innovative digital, data-driven or AI-enabled solutions for the grains trade sector. The competition will be organised in three revenue-based categories: ventures with annual revenue of up to US$2 million, ventures generating between US$2 million and US$5 million, and companies with revenue of more than US$5 million.
The challenge officially opened on 23 March 2026, with the submission deadline set for 30 April 2026. Winners will have the prestigious opportunity to present their solutions at the International Grains Conference 2026 on 10 June 2026, held at the IET Savoy Place in London. In addition to global visibility, finalists will compete for a total prize pool of US$150,000.
